With the development of globalisation, English ability and the knowledge of foreign countries’ cultures are considered as the essential prerequisites of the successful.
To expand students’ horizons and practise oral English, since October of 2021, Business and Foreign Languages Division I of SICFLS has held a continuous informal activity, the “English Corner” on every Tuesday and Thursday regularly.
The host of the activity, Mr. Dale is very easy-going and experienced. In the first a few classes, we had a great time. Games, debate, fairy tales, horror stories, and so forth... In these topics, we used English as much as possible and acquired a lot of fun.
On Nov. 2nd., a few days after Halloween, we tried to make Jack-o’-lanterns. Here the author wishes to appreciate Mr. Dale for offering us of pumpkins and tools. During the entire process of using knives for carving the face of the Jack-o’-lanterns, we pored over all instructions and obeyed the safety rules strictly. No injures happened under Mr. Dale’s care.
Since the author has completely no talents of art. Hanna Liu, the author’s partner from Class 2101, took charge of most design and characterisation work, while the author was responsible for cleaning the inside of the pumpkin. “I and my partner had a lot of fun, he took a very fantastic photo of me,’ said Hanna.
Our effort turned out to be meaningful. We created a very unique Jack-o’-lantern successfully at last.
“In my opinion, making jack-o’-lanterns is both interesting and meaningful. Under Dale's guidance we learned how to make our own unique jack-o’-lanterns. This activity lets us know and approach Halloween. It's really fantastic,” said Arthur Liang from Class 2115, who majors in Business English.
In summary, English Corner is a very beneficial activity. We have done a lot of things hitherto. If you are free on Tuesday or Thursday at 2:30 p.m. and want to practise English a little more, please join us! You may go to Guanghua Building 707 to contact with Mr. Dale for more information.
